Centertown
Centertown is the heartbeat of Bedford. Turn-of-the-century buildings in the Italianate style welcome you into a modern, vibrant commercial and destination setting.
As a backdrop for major Town events, Centertown has seen a lot. Centertown's mercantile history has continued to this day, and it has enjoyed significant investment and revitalization over the course of the past 50 years.
Bedford became one of the first communities to receive the "Main Street" designation from the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development. The beauty of Centertown is year- round, evidenced by the careful attention to little details like hanging flower pots that burst into life from the spring into the fall.
In the early Fall, Centertown becomes the host of Centerfest, a weekend long street festival that has been continuously held for over 40 years. Centerfest draws a crowd between 15,000-20,000 people from all across the region to enjoy craft vendors, carnival rides, and street fare in a pleasant and relaxed atmosphere.
Come the wintertime, Centertown is transformed again to celebrate Christmas in classic Bedford style. Lights are hung from the streetlights and elegantly draped over the street.
An annual Christmas parade marches through Bridge Street and Main Street, and families come to town to enjoy the horse and carriage rides that jingle through the town. The familiar trots of horses hooves are a welcome sound to the business owners who keep extended hours during the month of December for holiday shoppers.
Christmas in Centertown would not be complete without the annual tree lighting in Centertown Park. Crowds gather to watch as Santa and Mrs. Claus illuminate the night with merry and bright lights.
