Who We Are
The Town of Bedford is centrally located between the metropolitan areas of Roanoke and Lynchburg, and is only 178 miles from Washington D.C. The population is 6,466 and the town spans an area of about 9 square miles.

Affectionately dubbed "World's Best Little Town," it isn't hard to see why so many people choose Bedford as their preferred place to Live, Work, and Play.

Bedford has a fun, diverse, and at times quirky character. Bedford is known for breathtaking natural beauty and a flair for creativity, with one of the most vibrant cultural and culinary districts in the region.
Not to be outdone by any other place on earth, Bedford also earned a spot on the Travel Channel's list of the Top 10 Christmas Capitals of the World.
Where We've Been
The Town of Bedford was founded in 1782 as the Town of Liberty when Bedford County ceded its eastern portion to form Campbell County, and the county seat was moved from New London to be centrally located within the county borders.

Bedford was the home of a few wealthy plantation owners in the 19th century, and the tranquil landscape was a place of refuge for statesmen like Thomas Jefferson, who frequented Bedford as a vacation destination. Bedford's population grew as a result of the tobacco industry and the presence of textile factories, many of which are still standing today.
​
Bedford is very well known for the Bedford Boys, who were the first to land on the beaches of Normandy during the 1944 D-Day invasion that liberated France from Nazi rule. 19 of the soldiers from Bedford would lay down their lives that day, earning Bedford the somber title of the Town that suffered the highest losses per capita on D-Day.
